Losail MotoGp World Championship - Qatar 2016

Posted: Tuesday, 15 March 2016

17 - 20
March

“The harder the battle the sweeter the victory”

Get geared to witness the first round of the MotoGP™ World Championship under the brilliant floodlights of the Losail International circuit here in Qatar, the only night race on the calendar. Click here for schedules and click here for Statistics Grand Prix of Qatar.

The 2016 season sees the most radical regulation changes since MotoGP™ entered the four-stroke era in 2002.

Michelin also step in as the official tyre supplier of the MotoGP™ class, presenting an all-new challenge for riders and the factories to overcome.

Of all the riders it seems reigning MotoGP™ World Champion Jorge Lorenzo has adapted the quickest to the new MotoGP™ landscape.

The five-time champion led both the Sepang and Qatar Tests by over half a second, stamping his authority and intent to retain his crown. Lorenzo is yet to take back-to-back championships in the premier class and will be aiming to avoid the difficulties that plagued him in Losail in 2014 and 2015. Aside from those years, Lorenzo had always finished on the Qatar podium in MotoGP™, winning in 2012 and 2013 from pole.

After a hard fought title battle that went down to the final race of the year, Valentino Rossi remains as hungry as ever for his tenth title.

Three times ‘The Doctor’ has won in Qatar, including his thrilling 2015 victory where he bested fellow Italian Andrea Iannone and Andrea Dovizioso after a race long brawl. AS the oldest and most successful rider on the grid, Rossi has little left to prove but continues to line up with as much passion and burning desire as in 1996 when he made his Grand Prix debut.

Unfortunately for the Repsol Honda Team, 2015 proved a difficult year for Marc Marquez.

The double MotoGP™ World Champion crashed six times as he attempted to override his RC213V, an overly aggressive engine haunting him throughout the year. Testing ahead of the 2016 season also proved difficult for Marquez who crashed multiple times and was unable to find a comfortable setting with his bike, Honda continue to work behind the scenes but 2016 looks set to start with an uphill battle.

Moto2™ and Moto3™ World Championship heads to desert showdown

After two successful official tests, the Moto2™ World Championship venture to Qatar looking to dethrone Johann Zarco, and after multiple private tests and two official tests, the Moto3™ World Championship are ready for their first outing of 2016.

Be sure to catch some fantastic action and excitement at Moto2 and Moto3 as well.

Additionally the local and regional riders will be showcasing their talent during the MotoGp as they would compete for the first round of the Losail Cup at the 600 Supersport category. Click here for schedules.

“Supersport” racing is another category of motorcycle road racing that employs modified production motorcycles. To be eligible for Supersport racing, a motorcycle must have a four-stroke engine of between 400 and 600 cc for four-cylinder machines, and between 600 and 750 cc for twins, and must satisfy the FIM homologation requirements.

Supersport regulations are much tighter than Superbikes. Supersport machines must remain largely as standard, while engine tuning is possible but tightly regulated.

Highlights Losail MX Championship Round 3

Posted: Saturday, 5 December 2015

British rider Benjamin Menzies clinched the MX1 win in the third round of the Losail MX Championship winning the two moto ahead of the Kuwaiti rider Mohammed Jaffar with a perfect riding and no mistake. In the MX1 category, the first place was for Benjamin Menzies, Mohammed Jaffar came second and Sultan Al Balooshi was third.

'In the first race, I got a reasonable start and I chased to be in the lead of the race and go ahead with Ryan Blair for the front. From there, we pull a bit of the gap away from Jaffar and Mishary and after that , once you pull the gap, just try to relax and try to keep constant throughout the race’ said Menzies. 'The second race was much better. I got a better start and even I didn’t took the hole shoot I was first into the first corner, and that is a big advantage when you are ahead of anybody else and from there on I just started to pull the gap, pull the head and then kind of play until the end. It is a difficult track so you have to think a lot of and it is a very technical track, which is nice and I am very happy with this win and now leading the championship.’ he added.

Jaffar had an electrical problem with his KTM bike and he had to ride with one of his friends, so this made him to feel less comfortable in the track and fight for the win 'I was coming comfortable for this race but I had some electrical problems with my bike and I had to race with my friend’s bike, another brand and I am not used to ride it but, no excuses, Ben was on the first place and he was fast. I tried my best even If I was not riding my bike and I will try to push harder in the coming round to reduce the gap in the standings. Thanks to QMMF for the hospitality and to my sponsors Red Bull, Sand Garde, Adidas, MX Academy and Drag 965.’ Jaffar said after the races.

Menzies is leading now the standings with 97 points and Jaffar is second with 91 and Balooshi is third with 78 points.

Ryan Blair got the victory in the MX2 category also winning the two moto and he is leading now the standings with 150 points as he has won all the races. The Kuwaiti riders Meshary Abou Shaibah and Barak Al Jasmi came in second and third place respectively in the MX2. For Meshary, today he rode very good at the Losail track and hopes to be better in the coming rounds and try to beat Ryan ’Today the track was really good, many thanks to QMMF for today as the maintenance people made a great job. The first moto was much better than the second one but I am happy with the second place in the podium and I hope to be better in the next round’ said Meshary after the podium. Abou Shaibah is second in the standings with 132 points and Moath Al Ansari is third with 118 points.

Finnish rider Tomi Sarivaara was the winner in the Veterans category while the Emirati rider Ahmed Al Nuaimi won the Junior MX 65 category and Enrico Barbaglia from Italy won the Junior MX 85cc.

Highlights World Superbike Championship & QSBK Round 13 & Round 2

Posted: Sunday, 25 October 2015

Losail International Circuit witnessed yet another spectacular World Superbike Championship!

The final FIM Superbike World Championship race of 2015 was won on the final lap after another race-long fight as Leon Haslam (Aprilia Racing Team – Red Devils), who took his second win of the year – the fifth of his WorldSBK career – beat Chaz Davies (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati SBK Team). In securing 2nd, the Welshman also claimed the runner-up spot in the final standings ahead of Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team), who came home third. Leon’s winning margin was 0.110s and his victory gave Aprilia a double win in the season finale, just as they had one year ago under Qatar’s floodlights.

Michael van der Mark (Pata Honda World Superbike) completed his debut WorldSBK year with another strong showing, the Dutchman finishing fourth after running in the leading group for the first 12 laps, before dropping back a little in the closing stages.

The other big news of Race 2 was Jonathan Rea’s first DNF of the season, which put an end to his hopes of setting a new outright points record in the series; the 2015 World Championship had to pull out on lap 6 as his KRT machine suffered a technical problem.

Sylvain Guintoli was fifth on his last race for Pata Honda. The 2014 champion ended the night’s second 17-lap encounter a fraction of a second ahead of Leandro Mercado (Barni Racing), who took a season’s best sixth.

Seventh was Randy de Puniet (Voltcom Crescent Suzuki), who equalled his previous best result of the season, while 8th to 10th went to Niccolò Canepa (Althea Racing Ducati), David Salom (Team Pedercini Kawasaki) and Ayrton Badovini (BMW Motorrad Italia).

The final point scorers in Race 2 were Christophe Ponsson (Team Pedercini), Gianluca Vizziello (Grillini SBK Team), Gabor Rizmayer (BMW Team Toth), Imre Toth (BMW Team Toth) and Alex Phillis who scored his first WorldSBK championship point.

Xavi Fores (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati Superbike Team) did not compete in Race 2 after withdrawing through illness while Alex Lowes retired his Voltcom Crescent Suzuki at the end of the opening lap. Leon Camier (MV Agusta Reparto Corse) was able to start the second encounter but he too to finish for the second time today.

WorldSBK Qatar - Race 2
1 - Leon Haslam Aprilia Racing Team - Red Devils
2 - Chaz Davies Aruba.it Racing - Ducati Superbike Team +0.110
3 - Tom Sykes Kawasaki Racing Team +0.388

Final standings
1 - Jonathan Rea Kawasaki Racing Team 548

News WTCC is Coming to Doha! Introduction

Posted: Sunday, 28 June 2015

Picture Courtesy of Jean Michel Le Meur / DPPI - Taken from GPMalaysia

The World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) is coming to Doha thanks to  Mr. Nasser Khalifa Al-Attiya the President of Qatar Motor and Motorcycle Federation (QMMF) backed by the continuous support of H.H the Emir Shaykh Tamim Bin Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani.

An excellent collaboration with WTCC and no doubt Qatar and the racing enthusiast are very grateful to Mr. Attiya's for his long continuous dedicated tremendous support for Racing in Qatar

What is WTCC?

The World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) is an international racing championship organized by the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA). Inaugurated in 2005 this championship includes 12 races in 12 different countries and tracks. The drivers are awarded points depending on how they place. After the last race, the driver with the most points wins the championship.

According to the well known Brazilian driver Augusto Farfus  "It's a quite simple championship, because to race the car must have four doors, two-liter engine, we don't care about how many cylinders it has, if it has four, five, or six cylinder. And the factory must produce minimum 10,000 cars a year…road cars. It must sell 10,000 cars, and that is all. The race formats are two races, about 30 minutes each, it's normally 50 [kilometers]. "

And according to him WTCC is different from other car races because of this "I think one of the best things that we have in the race that we use is the same car that you have in your garage. And the public, everybody who supports our race…they go to the track to support the same car as [they have in the] garage. And sometimes we see a guy who [supports] Alfa Romeo because his neighbor has a BMW so he wants to see his Alfa Romeo win..."

(Taken from here)

According WTCC: "Citroën, Honda and LADA all field factory teams in the WTCC, while Chevrolet has endorsed a car built to the new-for-2014 technical regulations, which require the use of mass-production five-door cars fitted with 1.6-litre direct injection turbocharged engines and a number of aerodynamic aids. Several privateer drivers and teams also take part and contest a trophy supported by the WTCC’s official tyre partner, Yokohama.

Eurosport Events produces extensive television coverage of the WTCC with races broadcast live. The company also provides its expertise in co-ordinating the championship and managing all aspects of media rights distribution, promotions and relations, social media and commercial partnerships."

Checkout the Eurosports high quality fabulous videos of WTCC event here for some real insight of the championship.

This extra ordinary race is much loved by fans all over the world which is in full swing from March to November. This year the Championship will end at the Lusail International Circuit, bringing in a new flavour, an exciting addition to its events calendar, And such events will also encourage the locals to engage in this type of racing and learn new techniques and skills to enhance their talents and match the international drivers competing with them in the future.
